It’s time to live like you were dying.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

This is always an exciting time of year here at Pine Press Printing with the holidays, year-end wrap up and getting together with loved ones.  This time of year always seems to be the best time for reflection to take some measure of what you’ve accomplished and where you are heading next.  In that spirit, over the past few weeks with the help of my wife Lori, I’ve been doing some serious reflecting.

I believe it was Michael Landon who said:

“Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day”.

I just love this quote. Its easy to take it all for granted sometimes… we get stuck in our own rut… wake up, take shower, get kids to school, go to work, come home, cook dinner, clean house, watch TV, bedtime… repeat.

I challenge you to sit down by yourself for 15 minutes today and think about the things you always wanted to do… the things you were going to do… the things that you would have, should have, could have done, “if only”.

Make a list of these things, pick something, and do it.

Here are three tips to keep in mind:

  1. 1. Do It Now! – There is no better time than the present.
  2. 2. Seize the Opportunity – Opportunities are those things that may present themselves once in a lifetime and in a very small window of time. Most of us wish we would have taken more risks in our lives.
  3. 3. Never Give Up! – One of my favorite quotes is “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas Edison

  4. Best Wishes,
    John

Understanding the meaning of “under promise and over deliver”

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

In a bid to win over customers it seems that many businesses will make many promises, many of which seldom come to fruition. How many times have you been ‘duped’ in to buying a service or product, which the seller claims “has a good after sales warranty package”, and when you have tried to claim on the warranty you have found that it isn’t worth the paper it is written on? This is a prime example of a business over promising and under delivering. There are several other examples of businesses over promising and under delivering that happen to many people on a daily basis, such as in the printing business stating a product will be delivered in three working days when in fact it is delivered in five working days. Over promising and under delivering is a risky strategy for businesses as it is likely to disgruntle the customers, and virtually eliminate the possibility of repeat sales.

Under promising and over delivering is the opposite of over promising and under delivering. For example, if a business states a product will be dispatched in five working days and it is dispatched in three working days it has performed better than it promised to. Under promising and over delivering is doing that little bit more than stated and going that extra mile to satisfy customers. It is providing value for money, which is something all customers want.

In all transactions customers will have an expectation, and this must be met and managed by the business. By stating the cost of products and services, the quality of the products or services, the delivery times, the after sales package and warranty etc. it is often the business that determines the customers’ expectations. Exceeding customers’ expectations i.e. under promising and over delivering, is beneficial for businesses as it often results in repeat sales and free advertising through word of mouth. This has always been our goal at Pine Press Printing & Mailing. Come give us a try!

What ever happened to customer service?

Monday, August 29th, 2011

There is no doubting that life moves at a fast pace. Everyone wants “it” and they want “it” now! So in this day and age, when life is traveling so quickly we are often left to wonder where the customer service has gone?
Customer service is an integral part of any business. It doesn’t matter if you sell fine printing or if you fix plumbing, your business will definitely be impacted by the level of customer service that is provided. In a day where most businesses are highly competitive, finding something that sets you apart from the others can truly make or break your business. We have worked diligently at delivering exceptional customer service to our customers, hoping they will leave our business feeling like they have had a wonderful experience. Believing they will not hesitate to return and more then likely, they will tell their family and friends about how great their experience was.
Customer service however, does not simply entail greeting the person and saying thank you. It also includes how situations are handled when things don’t go as planned.  Knowing that problems have been taken seriously and reasonably resolved is huge in developing trust in a business relationship.

So to revisit the question “what happened to customer service”? The answer is that smarter businesses are still taking the time to provide it.

Come by Pine Press Printing & Mailing and see what has set us apart from the others for over 32 years.

It All Goes Back To The “Golden Rule”

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

We help our customers to avoid costly mistakes.
“I buy from Pine Press Printing because you always watch my back,” a customer once told me. No one wants to make mistakes or look stupid. Making big expensive mistakes can get a print buyer fired, so it’s our job to help prevent customers from making them. We like to ask more questions. Insure our customers fully understand processes and delivery schedules. Point out potential problems and then discussing them. If we catch an error late in the game, we always speak up. Letting the customer verify it is actually a mistake and then fixing it. If we are asked to produce a job in a unnecessarily costly or inefficient way, we will discuss with you alternative options. Stopping customers from screwing up is a big value-add, we include it with every order.

It all goes back to the “Golden Rule”.  One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.

Elevate Your Business with an Elevator Speech

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Imagine you are in an elevator at a business conference and a stranger notices your name tag and asks, “What do you guys do?” You only have a few seconds to make a powerful mini-presentation before the doors open.

By preparing an “elevator speech,” you not only have the opportunity to make a great first impression, but also demonstrate your professionalism and position yourself as an expert in your field in just a few words. An elevator speech should last no longer than the average elevator ride and offer unique highlights of what your company does and the solutions you offer.

Here are a few tips for creating an effective elevator speech:

  • Pique interest and feature highlights that set your company apart.
  • Talk about topics of most interest to your listener, focusing on what your service can do for them.
  • Avoid slang and industry jargon that your listener may not understand.
  • Motivate listeners to take action by showing your passion for the topic.
  • Develop different versions for different situations and audiences.
  • Keep it fresh. Update your speech as your business grows and changes.
  • Don’t be afraid to leave your elevator speech as a voice mail message on cold calls.
  • Remember practice makes perfect. Ask others for feedback on how to improve your speech. Consider joining a group such as Toastmasters to boost your confidence.
  • Always end with an action request, such as asking for a business card or follow-up meeting.

Print materials such as business cards, brochures, and fact sheets are a great way to back-up your elevator speech and be remembered. Stop by today for help creating professional marketing materials that help do the talking for you.

How to write a Friendly Email!

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Good Email Etiquette

I am blessed with many contacts, followers, and friends, and as a result I receive a lot of email correspondence each week.

I am continually surprised at how many of these emails are somewhat… unfriendly. Sometimes it seems like everybody is too busy to take an extra moment to be kind and courteous in their emails. But those that do stand far above the rest — and that is where the opportunity for good relationship marketing begins
Here’s what I mean…
Each week, over 50% of the email messages I receive lack one or more of the basic common courtesies associated with good letter writing. It is very common for me to get email that doesn’t contain a greeting, a personalized closing, or a signature that contains complete contact information. I’ll bet you’ve noticed this alarming trend, too. I say alarming because poor email courtesies like these could adversely affect the impression your customer service representatives are making on your customers.
On the positive side, I think it would be smart to spend a little time thinking about this issue because I believe it represents a good marketing opportunity for your company. After all, if your company consistently provides warm and friendly email correspondence, you’ll differentiate your firm from many of your competitors.

Here are three simple ways to write a friendly email.

Let’s start with the greeting. A surprising number of email messages don’t have a greeting. Can you imagine getting a phone call where the person started taking without even taking the time to say “hello”? Well, that’s exactly what happens with a lot of email. Often, there is no greeting at all, or the sender merely says “John” and then begins their email. I think it is always friendly and courteous to say something like:
Dear John,
Greetings John,
Good afternoon John,
Personally, I like something simple like ‘Hi John.’ If the email conversation goes back and forth a few times, I like to simply say ‘Hi again, John,’ as I begin each email.
Next is the close. Again, I frequently receive numerous emails where the sender chooses to omit a friendly closing statement. Often, all I see is their default signature line which often only contains partial information about who they are. It’s not a very friendly way to end a letter. I suggest using something like:
Sincerely,
Cordially yours,
Respectfully yours,
My two favorites are ‘Kindest regards’ and ‘Best regards.’ Whatever you choose, it’s important to include a warm closing statement.
And finally, about your signature. I would sincerely encourage you to take a moment to look at the signature information your company uses. (You do have a standard, company-wide signature that you have personally approved for all of your employees, don’t you?) Please double check to make sure it has all of the necessary contact information needed to transact business with your company. I think a good signature line contains the following information:
John Moroz
johnmoroz@pinepressprinting.com
www.pinepressprinting.com
120 Ellis Ave.
Lexington, SC  29072
Is your company using email correspondence to help you build a better relationship with your customers, or does your email come across a little cold and impersonal? Taking a few extra moments to insert a few well-selected cordial words in each email is all it takes to write a winning letter that is friendly and warm.

P.S. Check back with this Pine Press Blog and also with John’s Blog for more business tips.

Banners – We Do Them Right!

Get Noticed With Banners

Banners –  We Do Them Right!

Simple but catchy!  Attract potential customers with bright colors and eye catching graphics.

Every company wants to distinguish itself from the crowd.  A great banner is something you can use to obtain an advantage over your competitors.

Banners are one of our most requested products.  We can create a simple banner with basic text, or an elaborate banner with full-color images.  Whether you’re promoting an event, advertising a sale, or trying to display information; we can design any banner to meet your needs.

When banners are used outdoors, many times they require stronger materials and reinforced hems to withstand the abuses of Mother Nature.  While most outdoor banners are a temporary means of signage, they can last a long time; if they are made and installed properly.   As experts in this area, we can recommend the correct material, weight, finish, and size for your banner.

5 Reasons Why Your Online Presence will Replace Your Resume in 10 Years

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Resume

We’re seeing more and more recruiters use the web as a place to search for talent and conduct employment background searches. This trend is set to increase year over year and I’ve been predicting that an “online presence search” will become as common as a drug test since 2007. Your online presence should also consist of your own website at yourfullname.com. This website is the core of your online presence and if you optimize it effectively, it will rank number one for your name in major search engines such as Google. Also, your online presence should contain social network profiles, with vanity URL’s, on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter at a minimum. I would also get listed on sites, such as Spokeo.com, and obtain your Google profile.
