ZZ Top and a Sharp Dressed Man or Woman

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Written by: Tom Hackelman – an expert in the area of personal branding.

What can we learn about personal branding from ZZ Top?  Using their song, Sharp Dressed Man, as the backdrop, we can learn a lot.

For years, the professional dress of the modern salesman was a suit.  Sharp and tailored, the suit represented corporate America.  You could work for a small 10-person company, but a good suit, shirt and tie combination would still help you stand out.

Today, salespeople dress far too casually to be taken very seriously.  We have shifted from casual Friday to casual every day.  Don’t get me wrong; many of these salespeople still dress appropriately with a nice polo and slacks, but I have to raise the question:  Does this style create the image in the mind of your clients that you want to project?  Does it project leadership?  Credibility?  Does it command respect?

Dave Lakhani, in his book, How to Sell When Nobody’s Buying, writes:

“When I’m dressed better than my peers, better than my competition, and when I do it consistently, I stand out in a crowd.  I look like the leader, and your clients want to buy from people who meet their expectation of trust.  When you see CEOs on television and when you meet them in person, they are wearing the uniform of a CEO.”

Part of the story you are crafting – your personal brand story – is tied to how people perceive you.  Dressing according to your personal brand adds tremendous credibility to your narrative.  It sets you apart from the crowd and signifies you as someone people want to do business with.

Start being a sharp dressed man or woman – whichever applies!

Eye-Stopping Headlines

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

If you want to get prospective customers excited about doing business with your company, creating eye-stopping, mind-grabbing headlines is a great way to do it! While the content of an advertisement is helpful for relaying information about your company’s products or services, it’s the headline that creates the initial relationship with the reader, and entices them to read about what your company has to offer. Here are six types of headlines that will boost inquiries about your company: 1.) The problem/solution headline. Readers are looking for products and services that will make their lives easier. By writing a headline that poses a problem many readers may have, and offers the solution your company can provide, you have created a situation that will most likely encourage the reader to take a look at the remainder of your advertisement.

2.) The historical event headline. If there is something newsworthy about your product or service, such as it is the world-premiere, or a limited-time offer, it can prove to be an effective draw.

3.) The testimonial. Providing a testimony from a person that has used your product or service encourages prospective customers to think, “If it worked for him, it can work for me, too!”

4.) Product claims. Include statistics and percentages in your headline to increase a product’s credibility. It is important to credit the source of the information you use because it gives your prospective customers a piece of mind about using your product. Even if the source is not well-known by the public, it should be included.

5.) Outrageous statements. The purpose of writing a headline is to provoke curiosity in your readers – making an outrageous statement relating to your product or service will almost force your readers to see what you have to say.

6.) Questions. Posing a question to your readers allows them to take an active role in your advertisement. The key is asking a question that most people will feel compelled to answer because it is relevant to their lives. People will naturally want to know what their answer to the question has to do with your products or services, and will continue reading your ad to discover what your company can do for them.

Headlines are a key component to successful advertising. Creating intriguing headlines will revolutionize your advertising and will have a great affect on your company’s success.

Working Outside The Box – January 2010

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Lori, myself and the whole team at Pine Press Printing & Mailing thank you, our loyal customers for a record breaking January!

Working Outside The Box!

Working Outside The Box!

January 2010 brought many rewarding & challenging projects for our crew. On one occasion we opened our shop Saturday night under a special arrangement we have with a Carolina’s based group of competition judges. They start arriving at 7:00 P.M. on Saturday night and must have all their results tallied, copied & bound before leaving our shop and finalizing the competition Sunday morning. Lori brought in Fatz famous food and drinks to comfort our weary travelers. 3 1/2 hours and over 15,000 copies later our last happy judge left the shop. A new Pine Press Printing & Mailing record! In over 23 years of handling this job, this was our largest & quickest ever! Obviously experience has taught us many lessons on handling “special” jobs such as this one. We have also added the latest high speed equipment and invested heavily in training every member of our team. At Pine Press Printing & Mailing 2010 will be the year of ” Working Outside The Box”.

Pine Press Printing & Mailing Recieves Top 10 Award

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Jan. 13, 2010

Lori Moroz -  president of Pine Press Printing & Mailing of Lexington, SC receives “Top 10 Small Business’s” award in Lexington County for 2010.

At the Lexington County Economic Forum Wednesday night, Lexington’s Top 10 Small Business leaders were honored.

Describing her formula for running a successful small business

Mrs. Moroz said:

First, let me say Thank You! This is quite an honor to be named one of the Top 10 Small Businesses in Lexington County for 2010 and to be a part of this outstanding group of other great small businesses that are being acknowledged this evening.

Jerry Bellune has asked that we give two minutes on why we think our companies are successful. So I looked up what success means according to Wikipedia. It gives us a few definitions which include: the achievement of one’s aim or goals, financial profitability, and the opposite of failure. I specifically like the definition, the opposite of failure. Although there may be several failures on the way to success, you can only achieve success by not giving up and a determination to keep reaching for your goals. 2009 for Pine Press Printing and probably several small businesses was a very tough year – a year of tightening up the belt, leaning up the company and worker even harder to reach for these goals.

At Pine Press Printing, we may not have meet every goal this past year, but our determination to keep reaching will be our continued success in 2010. The only way a small business can be successful is to have a team – a great team that is committed and working towards the same goal.

I have that team (Melony Stuckey, Tina Phillips, Cretia Beasley, Lorie Taylor, Marty Funchess, April Amick-Sexton, Nathan Harmon, Doris New & Courtney Taylor). These are the people that make Pine Press Printing & Mailing successful. They are the reason that we survived and thrived in 2009 and they will be the reason we continue to be successful in 2010. We have built our reputation and integrity on superb customer service that goes beyond what is expected, doing what we say we are going to do, along with building relationships with our clients and our community. We believe in giving back. I don’t think that true Success can ever be enjoyed without giving back, whether it is to your church, your family, your schools, or your community.

Again, Thank You, I am humbled to be a part of this group of top 10 small businesses and proud to have a team that supports me and this community.
