It’s time to live like you were dying.

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

This is always an exciting time of year here at Pine Press Printing with the holidays, year-end wrap up and getting together with loved ones.  This time of year always seems to be the best time for reflection to take some measure of what you’ve accomplished and where you are heading next.  In that spirit, over the past few weeks with the help of my wife Lori, I’ve been doing some serious reflecting.

I believe it was Michael Landon who said:

“Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day”.

I just love this quote. Its easy to take it all for granted sometimes… we get stuck in our own rut… wake up, take shower, get kids to school, go to work, come home, cook dinner, clean house, watch TV, bedtime… repeat.

I challenge you to sit down by yourself for 15 minutes today and think about the things you always wanted to do… the things you were going to do… the things that you would have, should have, could have done, “if only”.

Make a list of these things, pick something, and do it.

Here are three tips to keep in mind:

  1. 1. Do It Now! – There is no better time than the present.
  2. 2. Seize the Opportunity – Opportunities are those things that may present themselves once in a lifetime and in a very small window of time. Most of us wish we would have taken more risks in our lives.
  3. 3. Never Give Up! – One of my favorite quotes is “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas Edison

  4. Best Wishes,
    John

6 Ways Print Newsletters Beat Email Newsletters – And Why They Need to Be Part of Your Marketing Mix

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

1. Printed mail gets delivered – It’s never blocked or caught in spam filters. Faulty connections, email authentication and webmail service idiosyncrasies are not issues. And, you have no worries about connection speeds.

2. Print newsletters have more perceived value – Think about it: How many companies are willing to do this? Your clients aren’t stupid. They understand the energy, cost and time required to send them a great newsletter every month. It will get their immediate attention.

3. Print newsletters let you use unlimited amount of images – A picture really is worth a thousand words. Print newsletters are not shackled by bandwidth. That means you can use a variety of text, graphics and formatting styles to capture the interest of your clients.

4. Print newsletter are sticky – Print newsletters have great ‘hang-time’. Not only are they likely to be read from start to finish, they usually get passed around. Hand-along readership can be as high as four-to-one. Talk about free marketing!

5. Print newsletters offer convenient and comfortable reading – Printed newsletters are much easier on the eyes. Reading articles of any length on a computer screen is uncomfortable and often inconvenient. Plus, a print newsletter allows you to mark sections you find interesting, take it to work and leave it there to be picked up by workmates.

6. Print newsletters stand out and get noticed – By using color, logos and a familiar return address, a print newsletter is easy to spot. With an inbox filled with subject lines, every message looks the same.

Here’s Your Best Bet

Make no mistake. There is a place for electronic communication with your customers. Websites and email are an important part of any business.

But the hands down best choice for keeping customers and getting more referrals and building relationships is to include print newsletters within your marketing mix

You can even offer your customers a choice. They will see that you really care about what they want, not just what you are willing to provide for them.

And that’s what relationship marketing is all about, isn’t it?

Understanding the meaning of “under promise and over deliver”

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

In a bid to win over customers it seems that many businesses will make many promises, many of which seldom come to fruition. How many times have you been ‘duped’ in to buying a service or product, which the seller claims “has a good after sales warranty package”, and when you have tried to claim on the warranty you have found that it isn’t worth the paper it is written on? This is a prime example of a business over promising and under delivering. There are several other examples of businesses over promising and under delivering that happen to many people on a daily basis, such as in the printing business stating a product will be delivered in three working days when in fact it is delivered in five working days. Over promising and under delivering is a risky strategy for businesses as it is likely to disgruntle the customers, and virtually eliminate the possibility of repeat sales.

Under promising and over delivering is the opposite of over promising and under delivering. For example, if a business states a product will be dispatched in five working days and it is dispatched in three working days it has performed better than it promised to. Under promising and over delivering is doing that little bit more than stated and going that extra mile to satisfy customers. It is providing value for money, which is something all customers want.

In all transactions customers will have an expectation, and this must be met and managed by the business. By stating the cost of products and services, the quality of the products or services, the delivery times, the after sales package and warranty etc. it is often the business that determines the customers’ expectations. Exceeding customers’ expectations i.e. under promising and over delivering, is beneficial for businesses as it often results in repeat sales and free advertising through word of mouth. This has always been our goal at Pine Press Printing & Mailing. Come give us a try!

What ever happened to customer service?

Monday, August 29th, 2011

There is no doubting that life moves at a fast pace. Everyone wants “it” and they want “it” now! So in this day and age, when life is traveling so quickly we are often left to wonder where the customer service has gone?
Customer service is an integral part of any business. It doesn’t matter if you sell fine printing or if you fix plumbing, your business will definitely be impacted by the level of customer service that is provided. In a day where most businesses are highly competitive, finding something that sets you apart from the others can truly make or break your business. We have worked diligently at delivering exceptional customer service to our customers, hoping they will leave our business feeling like they have had a wonderful experience. Believing they will not hesitate to return and more then likely, they will tell their family and friends about how great their experience was.
Customer service however, does not simply entail greeting the person and saying thank you. It also includes how situations are handled when things don’t go as planned.  Knowing that problems have been taken seriously and reasonably resolved is huge in developing trust in a business relationship.

So to revisit the question “what happened to customer service”? The answer is that smarter businesses are still taking the time to provide it.

Come by Pine Press Printing & Mailing and see what has set us apart from the others for over 32 years.

Use A Web Card to Promote your Site

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Website Card

Believe it or not, many people still do not have access to the internet or are computer-challenged.

Because this audience will not likely seek out your website online, a “web card” is a great way to highlight your site benefits and entice readers to visit.

Web cards are a versatile print marketing tool to help promote your website. Because the internet experience level of your audience may vary, web cards are a great unique way to announce a new (or re-designed) web site to your web savvy audience, and can also help pique interest among those who are new to or still learning how to use the internet.

A web card can be mailed as an oversized or folded postcard, as an enclosure in a standard #10 business envelope along with a cover letter, displayed in public areas, handed out at trade shows, enclosed in packages, distributed by partners, and handed to customers and prospects that are browsing or making a purchase.

When creating a web card, keep the message simple and define the primary benefit of your website and direct readers to it by using colorful visual images. When created to mimic the design of your site, web cards can highlight functionality and new features of your website. For example, a car dealership’s web card could show your home page and say, “Check out photos of new vehicles, view pricing, and get detailed information instantly.” If you want to highlight multiple site features, consider creating subsequent web cards that can be mailed to your mailing list over several weeks or months, which will also increase your top of mind awareness.

If you’re looking for other innovative ways to market your web site, give our creative team a call today!

Designing Direct Mail That Sells

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Marketing Tips

If it sells, it is creative. This, in essence, is the first rule of direct mail design, according to legendary designer and author, David Ogilvy. But what sells? Here are a few tips to keep in mind when designing your next direct mail marketing piece:

  • The basics are in your mailbox.
When you need inspiration, just go to your own personal direct mail idea vault… your mailbox! You probably receive tons of good direct mail each year. Set aside packages that catch your eye. The companies mailing these have spent thousands of dollars researching the best methods. Why not learn from their research?
  • Always try to beat your previous response rate.
Play around with the design before sending the mailing out again. See if minor changes make a significant difference in the response rate. Send out different versions of your design to similar groups in your database, and test to see which one results in the most responses. Whatever you do, test it, and then test it again!
  • Use words that grab the reader’s attention.
Here is a recent list of “Words that Grab Attention,” produced by Starch INRA Hooper Research Worldwide:

    Announcing / Discover / Easy / Exclusive / Free / Guarantee / Health / Help / Immediately / Introducing / Know / Learn / Love / Money / New / Now / Powerful / Profits / Protect / Proven / Results / Safe / Save / Secret(s) / Today / Trust / Understand / You

Stay In Touch with Your Clients

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Stay in Touch with your Clients

Don’t let anyone drive a wedge between you and your valued customers.

Your customers are feeling pressure like never before.  Many are concerned and looking for any help they can get.  They are looking to cut costs anyway they can.  So now is the time to stay in touch with them.  Your customers may have been loyal for many years but if someone comes in front of them and you have neglected your relationship they may be tempted to give this new attentive vendor a try. Don’t let this happen to you.

One of the best ways to stay in touch is with a newsletter.  There are many forms of newsletters, from the very simple to the very elaborate.  A client of ours that sells a premium product stays in touch with their customers through a regular mailing of a simple  newsletter.

Another fine way to keep in touch is with postcards.  Postcards are quickly and easily read.  There is no need to open an envelope.  Their postage is less than a letter and there is no stuffing and licking involved.  Lori and I will leave them on the dinner table for the other one to read. You wont catch me tossing a Kohls or Lexington Arms postcard, before she has had a chance to see it!

In addition to using postcards on a regular basis to promote seasonal or special events, postcards can be used to thank customers for business. You can get a stack of postcards made for your business and keep them handy to send out after a job is completed, sending a handwritten note saying “thank you”.

Contests are another was to stay in touch and help you be top of mind with your customers.  One of our clients uses a postcard to announce a contest that he has each year about this time rewarding all his customers with an opportunity to win a vacation get away.  What a great way to stay in touch and say thank at the same time.  And all for a little more than a quarter in postage.

At Pine Press Printing we have the ability to meet what ever you want in terms of newsletters or cards.  We can produce short runs digitally or print thousands of newsletters, all economically.  We have templates of pre-designed cards that we can personalize and even address the envelopes for you.  Or we can custom design something that you want done if you have a vague idea of what you want or if you have a clear idea in your mind.

When you want to stay in touch with your clients, remember Pine Press Printing is here to help.

21 “must have” words of every marketing expert

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Marketing "must have" words

Did you know that the English language contains over 250,000 words? But most marketing experts agree that there are 21 “best words” to use when you want to sell. Words should be chosen with the utmost care in marketing to convey precise messages to the reader. Words can motivate and actually make people think differently when they read them. Choosing the right word at the right time can greatly enhance the likelihood of creating a favorable impression of your product or business.

What’s in a word?

The exact words you use in your company’s marketing materials can make the difference between success and failure. If you choose the right words, your prospects will find you and your company irresistible. If you choose the wrong words, you’ll spend a lot of extra time trying to convince prospects to do business with you. When it comes to writing copy for your marketing materials, your word choices matter. Here is a list of the top 21 words that can help you sell more. I’ve taken the liberty of putting my top 10 word choices first. Use them wisely, and watch your marketing response rates improve.

The Top 10

1. The person’s name
2. You/your
3. Benefit
4. Quick/quickly
5. Easy/easily
6. Yes
7. Free
8. Guarantee/guaranteed
9. Money
10. Fun

The Remaining 11

11. Health/healthy
12. Love
13. Save
14. Proven
15. Results
16. New
17. Solution
18. How to
19. More
20. Now
21. Safe/safely

You may find yourself looking at these words and thinking that there is nothing new or innovative here. It is true that these words have been used throughout recent marketing history, but they still hold great power in their meanings. Some businesses have made great use of these words in combination with great products and services. As your marketing and copywriting skills increase, try to combine words that sell in the same sentence. For example, maybe you could say doing business with a locally owned company like yours is “quick, safe and easy.” Or, perhaps your firm provides “proven results with guaranteed benefits.” Or, you’ll “love our fun and money-saving” approach to customer service. Well, you get the idea.

When you use these 21 words in your sales and marketing materials, you will increase your prospects’ interest in what you’re saying, which ultimately leads to more chances, leads, and opportunities to make a sale. Learning to get in the habit of using the right word choices in your marketing materials is a smart thing to do.

Can you do this? Yes you can! We can help! And you’re going to love the results. Guaranteed!

Getting Out of the Congestion

Monday, January 31st, 2011

You are One of Many

Getting Out of the Congestion

In today’s business environment, you are just one of many competitors trying to capture the attention of your target audience. Unless you’ve invented the proverbial “better mouse trap,” your message sounds a lot like all the other messages that are being broadcast in today’s market. Consumer Reports calculates the average American is bombarded with 247 advertising messages each and every day. (www.ask.com, 2010) By the end of a single month, that equates to 7,410 marketing messages! How will your message break through the congested marketing highway?

Consider these challenges…

• Your call for a sales appointment is perhaps the tenth received today by your prospect.

• The email you just sent? It’s highly likely it’s one of 50 or 100 already in the prospect’s in-box.

• Your voice mail message? Forget it; they will just hit delete before your message gets 5 words out.

The Challenge

The challenge for each business professional is to identify ways for
your message to break through the crowded marketplace. But how
do you get out of the congestion? We need
to develop a way to rise above the
crowd and get our message directly to the source – our target
audience
. More importantly, we must accomplish a more significant
task: Develop a brand that gets people talking about you.

The Solution

Allow the professional team at Pine Press Printing & Mailing to develop a winning marketing strategy for your business.

From start to finish, whether enhancing your current image or totally revamping your “brand”.  Combining: copywriting, design, full color printing, banners and signs, websites & mailing. Pine Press has the knowledge, experience and professional team to deliver your message to your target audience, your customers.
